Arabic alphabet quiz

Put your knowledge of the Arabic alphabet to the test with a multiple-choice quiz. You name a letter, find the letter that matches a name, or do both in turn. Your score updates after every answer.

How to use

  1. Choose the question type: “Find the name”, “Find the letter” or “Mixed”.
  2. Press “Start”.
  3. Tap the answer you think is right.
  4. Read the feedback, then go to the “Next question”.
  5. Keep an eye on your score and try to beat your best score.

Three types of question

The quiz draws on the Arabic alphabet and offers several possible answers for each question.

  • Find the name: a letter such as خ appears and you pick its name (Khā’). This is the best drill for learning to read.
  • Find the letter: you are given a name, say “Ṣād”, and you look for ص among the options. This direction prepares you for writing.
  • Mixed: both types come up at random, so you revise without falling into a routine.

After each answer, the quiz confirms your choice or shows the letter you should have picked. That way, you learn the right answer at the very moment you got it wrong.

Tips for remembering the letters

Start by grouping letters that share a skeleton: ب, ت and ث differ only in the number and position of their dots, and the same goes for ج, ح and خ. Then note where those dots sit: one below for ب, two above for ت and three above for ث.

Link each name to an easy word, such as Mīm with ماء (water) or Nūn with نجمة (star). Sounds that English lacks, like ع or غ, are much easier to remember once you have heard them at least once.

Between rounds, go back to the interactive Arabic alphabet, where forms, examples and pronunciation hints are laid out for every letter. Once the names feel familiar, type your first words on the Arabic keyboard to move from recognising letters to writing them.

Your score stays with you

Your score and best score are kept on your device, inside the browser. Nothing goes to a server and no sign-up is required. Clearing your browsing data resets the best score, and on another phone or computer you start with a blank record.

There is an upside to this: you can make as many mistakes as you need, and nobody else sees your results.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fun way to learn the Arabic alphabet?
Alternate between discovery and recall: study a few letters on the alphabet grid, then check them with the quiz. Short, repeated questions help names and shapes stick. Brief, regular sessions work better than one long cramming session.
Does the quiz save my best score?
Yes, your best score is stored in your device's browser. It is not sent anywhere and you do not need an account. If you clear the site data or switch devices, it starts again from zero.
Which Arabic letters are easiest to confuse?
The ones that share the same outline and differ only by their dots: ب, ت, ث; ج, ح, خ; د, ذ; ر, ز; س, ش; ص, ض; ط, ظ; ع, غ. The “Find the letter” mode is good practice for telling them apart.
What is the difference between “Find the name” and “Find the letter”?
In “Find the name”, an Arabic letter appears and you choose its name, for example Jīm for ج. “Find the letter” works the other way round: you get the name and look for the letter. “Mixed” alternates between the two.
Can I take the Arabic alphabet quiz on my phone?
Yes, you answer by tapping, and the page adapts to small screens. Each device keeps its own best score.
