Turn any Gregorian date into its Hijri equivalent, or a Hijri date into the Gregorian calendar. Today's date in both calendars appears as soon as the page opens, together with the next key dates of the Islamic year. Every calculation runs inside your browser.
How to use
- Check today's Gregorian and Hijri dates at the top of the converter.
- Choose a direction: Gregorian → Hijri or Hijri → Gregorian.
- Enter the date with the date picker, or type the Hijri day, pick the month and type the year.
- Keep Umm al-Qura or switch to the tabular calendar, and add a one-day adjustment if your country follows local moon sighting.
- Read the result and press “Copy” to use it elsewhere.
Two directions: Gregorian to Hijri and back
In Gregorian → Hijri mode, the date picker opens on today’s date: choose a birthday, a wedding day or a date from history. In Hijri → Gregorian mode, enter a day from 1 to 30, pick one of the twelve Hijri months from Muharram to Dhu al-Hijjah, then type the year.
Each result comes in three forms, with a “Copy” button:
| Form | Example: 1 January 2000 |
|---|---|
| Written out, with the weekday | Saturday 24 Ramadan 1420 AH |
| In Arabic | السبت 24 رمضان 1420 هـ |
| Numeric (day/month/year) | 24/09/1420 |
If you enter a Hijri date that cannot exist, the converter shows an error message instead of guessing.
Umm al-Qura, tabular calendar and the one-day adjustment
By default, results follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, used for official purposes in Saudi Arabia. The tabular (arithmetic) calendar repeats a fixed 30-year cycle with 11 leap years, so any date can be worked out without observing the moon. The two often agree, but not always: 1 January 2020 falls on 6 Jumada al-Ula 1441 with Umm al-Qura and on the 5th with the tabular calendar.
The Adjustment setting moves the result one day forward or back. It is meant for countries where each month begins with a local moon sighting. Compare a date recently announced where you live with the converter’s answer, then keep whichever setting makes them match.
Upcoming dates: Ramadan, Eid and other key days
Below the result, a table gives the Gregorian date of the next eight landmarks of the Hijri year, worked out with your calendar and adjustment settings:
| Event | Hijri date |
|---|---|
| Islamic New Year | 1 Muharram |
| Ashura | 10 Muharram |
| Mawlid (the Prophet’s birthday) | 12 Rabi al-Awwal |
| Start of Ramadan | 1 Ramadan |
| Laylat al-Qadr | 27 Ramadan |
| Eid al-Fitr | 1 Shawwal |
| Day of Arafah | 9 Dhu al-Hijjah |
| Eid al-Adha | 10 Dhu al-Hijjah |
These dates help you plan time off, travel or a family meal, but treat them as forecasts. The start of Ramadan and both Eids are confirmed by each country, often only the evening before, and may land a day earlier or later than shown.
Also remember that in Islamic tradition a day begins at sunset. The night of 27 Ramadan therefore starts on the evening of the Gregorian day before the date in the table.
The Hijri calendar at a glance
Year 1 AH begins in 622, the year the Prophet emigrated from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra. Each year has twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, 354 or 355 days in all. Since this is shorter than the solar year, Islamic holidays move about eleven days earlier in the Gregorian calendar from one year to the next.
The converter runs entirely in your browser: no date is sent anywhere, and it keeps working offline once you install the app. To type a date in Eastern Arabic numerals (١٤٢٠), use the digits panel of the Arabic keyboard.
