This online Persian keyboard follows the standard Iranian layout (ISIRI 9147) and types from right to left, including the four letters Arabic lacks: پ, چ, ژ and گ. Use your QWERTY or AZERTY keyboard, tap the keys on screen or type in Finglish, then copy your Farsi text in one click.

How to use

  1. Stay in Layout mode and type: on QWERTY, A gives ش, S gives س and H gives ا.
  2. Find the extra Persian letters at the ends of the rows: چ on ], گ on ' and پ on M.
  3. Press Shift + B to insert a half-space, for example between می and روم.
  4. Don't know the layout? Switch to Words mode, type salam and press Space to get سلام.
  5. Click Copy and paste the Persian text into your chat, document or search box.

The standard Persian layout (ISIRI 9147)

This keyboard follows ISIRI 9147, the Iranian standard that Windows calls Persian (Standard), as documented in the Unicode CLDR. In Layout mode, the position of the key matters, not the letter printed on it: the key to the right of L always gives ک. These are the keys that differ between QWERTY and AZERTY:

Persian letter QWERTY key AZERTY key
ض Q A
ش A Q
ظ Z W
ج [ ^
چ ] $
ک ; M
گ ’ ù
پ M ,
و , ;

If you already type Arabic, the top and middle rows will look almost identical. چ takes the place of د, گ replaces ط, and the bottom row becomes ظ ط ز ر ذ د پ و. To practise, ایران is typed H, D, V, H, K and فارسی is typed T, H, V, S, D.

Half-space, punctuation and numbers

Persian writes some word parts side by side without connecting them: the verb prefix in می‌روم, the plural ending in کتاب‌ها, the comparative in بزرگ‌تر. That small gap is the half-space (نیم‌فاصله), typed with Shift + B. A normal space would split the word in two, and no space at all would join the letters.

Persian punctuation sits on the Shift layer: ، on 7, ؛ on the ’ key, ؟ on the / key, and the » « quotation marks on K and L. The number row types ۱۲۳; note that ۴, ۵ and ۶ are shaped differently from the Arabic digits ٤, ٥ and ٦. Shift + 4 writes the word ریال, Shift + 5 gives ٪, and the ﷼ sign is in the “Punctuation and half-space” panel.

Vowel marks and Arabic letters

Everyday Persian is written without short vowels, but you can add them: Shift + U for zabar َ, Shift + Y for zir ِ, Shift + T for pish ُ and Shift + I for tashdid ّ. The “Vowel marks (zabar, zir, pish)” panel groups them with the tanvin signs and the small hamza ٔ.

On screen, a long press reveals variants: ی offers ئ, ي and ى; ه offers ۀ and هٔ, used for the ezafe (خانهٔ ما); س offers ص and ث. Letters kept in Arabic loanwords, such as ة, are in the “Arabic letters” panel and on the AltGr layer.

Copy, share and keep going

The Copy button is always visible, and you can also save the text as .txt or as a PNG image, or share it on WhatsApp, Messenger or by email. The Floating keyboard stays on top of your other windows, and the installed app works offline. On a phone, the on-screen keys replace your device keyboard until you tap “Phone keyboard”. Your text is never sent to a server.

To type by sound without learning the layout, open the phonetic Persian keyboard. If design software splits your letters apart, the Persian text in Photoshop page explains the fix.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Persian on an English keyboard?
Keep Layout mode and the QWERTY setting: each key gives the letter found in the same spot on an Iranian keyboard. Q gives ض, A gives ش and M gives پ. The word سلام is typed S, G, H, L, with nothing to change in your system settings.
How do I type a half-space (ZWNJ) in Persian?
Press Shift + B. This invisible character, the zero-width non-joiner, stops two letters from joining without adding a visible space, as in می‌روم or کتاب‌ها. It is also the first button in the “Punctuation and half-space” panel.
What is the difference between Persian ی and Arabic ي?
They are separate Unicode characters, and the same goes for Persian ک and Arabic ك. Persian ی has no dots at the end of a word. Mixing the two forms can make a search inside a document miss the word, so this keyboard types the Persian forms; the Arabic ones stay available by long-pressing ی or ک, or in the “Arabic letters” panel.
How do I switch between Persian and English digits?
The number row types Persian digits ۱۲۳…۰ directly. Hold AltGr (Option on a Mac) and press a number key to get Western digits 1, 2, 3 instead. Shift + 2 and Shift + 3 give the Persian thousands separator ٬ and decimal separator ٫.
Where is the letter ژ on a Persian keyboard?
Press Shift + C. On the same Shift layer, H gives آ and M gives the hamza ء. On screen, long-pressing ز also offers ژ, and long-pressing ا offers آ, أ, إ, ء and ٱ.
Can I use this keyboard to write Dari?
Yes. Dari, spoken in Afghanistan, uses the same alphabet as the Persian of Iran, including پ, چ, ژ and گ, so this layout works for it. Tajik, however, is written in Cyrillic and is not covered by this keyboard.
Can I type Persian in Finglish?
Yes. In Words mode, type a word in Latin letters and press Space: merci becomes مرسی and khodahafez becomes خداحافظ. When a word could be spelled in more than one way, clickable suggestions show the alternatives.
