This Arabic keyboard online lets you write Arabic with your mouse, a touchscreen or the keys of your own computer. Pick the standard layout, phonetic typing or word mode, then copy your text and paste it anywhere.

How to use

  1. Choose an input mode: Layout, Phonetic or Words.
  2. Set the physical keyboard to QWERTY or AZERTY so the Latin hints on the keys match yours.
  3. Type on your keyboard or tap the on-screen letters; a long press on ا offers أ, إ, آ and ٱ.
  4. Open the vowel marks, regional letters or Arabic numerals panel when you need them.
  5. Click Copy, then paste the text into your document, message or search box.

Three ways to type in Arabic

  • Layout: every letter sits in its official position, as on keyboards sold in Arabic-speaking countries. Choose it if you already touch-type in Arabic or want to learn.
  • Phonetic: each Latin letter turns into the Arabic letter that sounds like it. sh gives ش, 3 gives ع, and capital letters are used for the emphatic consonants.
  • Words: type a whole word the way you say it, then press Space. marhaba becomes مرحبا, and close alternative spellings appear as suggestions.

The full rules, including Arabizi numbers and North African variants, are on the phonetic Arabic keyboard page.

In Layout and Phonetic modes, a bar under the text area offers up to five common words that start with the letters you have typed; tap one to insert it with a space after it. You can skip the hamza and vowel marks: اسل is enough to get إسلام. The Font menu changes the lettering of the text area and the PNG image, from Naskh to Amiri Quran, Kufic or Nastaliq, and in browsers that support it the microphone button lets you dictate your text.

Using the Arabic keyboard online with your physical keyboard

There is no need to buy an Arabic keyboard or add a language to your system: your computer’s keys work here straight away. Just tell the tool whether your keyboard is QWERTY or AZERTY, because a few letters move between the two. Some reference points:

Letter QWERTY key AZERTY key
ض Q A
ص W Z
ش A Q
ك ; M
ة M ,
ذ ` ²

The word سلام is typed with S, G, H and then L on either keyboard. With AltGr (Option on a Mac), the number row gives ١٢٣ and the ك key gives ڭ.

Vowel marks, regional letters and punctuation

Five panels extend the main keys: short vowels (harakat), Islamic symbols (﷽, ﷺ, ۞ and the ornate brackets ﴾ ﴿ placed around Quran verses), regional letters ڭ ڨ ڤ پ چ ژ گ used in dialects and foreign names, Arabic numerals, and Arabic punctuation (، ؛ ؟). A long press on a key reveals its variants: ك offers ڭ and گ, ف offers ڤ, and ق offers ڨ.

Copy, share or carry on from your phone

The Copy button is always on screen. You can also undo a keystroke, watch the character and word count, enlarge the text, save it as a .txt file or a PNG image, or share it on WhatsApp, Messenger or by email. The search buttons send your text directly to Google, YouTube or Wikipedia.

On a phone, the on-screen keyboard replaces the device keyboard; tap Phone keyboard to switch back to yours. Working in graphic design software? The Arabic keyboard for Photoshop page explains how to fix letters that appear disconnected or reversed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Arabic on a QWERTY keyboard?
Choose Layout mode and set the physical keyboard to QWERTY. Each key then produces the letter from the standard Arabic layout: Q types ض and A types ش. The Latin hints on the on-screen keys match your own keyboard.
Can I type Arabic without learning the Arabic layout?
Yes. In Words mode you type a word in Latin letters and press Space, so shukran becomes شكرا. The standard layout is only worth learning if you want to touch-type on a real Arabic keyboard.
How do I type Eastern Arabic numerals like ١٢٣?
Hold AltGr (Option on a Mac) and press a number on the top row: 1 gives ١ and 0 gives ٠. They are also one click away in the Arabic numerals panel.
Where is lam-alif (لا) on the Arabic keyboard?
On the standard layout, the B key types لا directly, on both QWERTY and AZERTY. Shift+B gives لآ, and a long press on ل also offers لأ and لإ.
Does the online Arabic keyboard work offline?
Yes, once you install it with the Install the app button. It then opens from your home screen or desktop even without a connection.
Can I keep the Arabic keyboard on top of another program?
Use the Floating keyboard button. In Chrome and Edge on a computer, it opens a small window that stays above your other windows; other browsers open it in a regular window.
Can I write Arabic using my voice?
Yes, with the microphone button, which appears in Chrome, Edge and Safari but not in Firefox. Before the first use, a notice explains that your browser's speech recognition service handles your voice; click Turn on the microphone, allow microphone access, then speak, and the text is inserted at the cursor. The Arabic variant follows the region in your browser's languages when possible (ar-MA for a Moroccan setting); otherwise Saudi Arabic (ar-SA) is used.
