This online Tifinagh keyboard writes Amazigh with the 33 letters of the official IRCAM alphabet. Type on your usual keyboard or tap the letters on screen, then copy the text wherever you need it.

How to use

  1. Stay in Layout mode so each Latin key types its Tifinagh letter, or switch to Phonetic mode to spell words in Latin letters.
  2. Type on your computer keyboard, or tap the on-screen letters on a phone or tablet.
  3. Hold Shift for emphatic letters and sounds specific to Amazigh: Shift+D types ⴹ, Shift+G types ⵖ and Shift+E types ⵄ.
  4. For ⴳⵯ, ⴽⵯ or a rarer sign, long-press the base letter or open one of the special character panels.
  5. Press Copy, then paste the text into your message, document or post.

Writing Amazigh with an online Tifinagh keyboard

Tifinagh is the script of the Amazigh language, Tamazight. Its modern form, Neo-Tifinagh, was standardized in 2003 by the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM): 33 letters, written from left to right. Tamazight became an official language in Morocco with the 2011 constitution, and in Algeria in 2016. You can see it in school textbooks, on road signs and on the front of public buildings.

Everything you type here is real Unicode text, so it pastes cleanly into WhatsApp, Word, an email or a social network. The page brings its own Noto Sans Tifinagh font, which means the letters display even on a device that has none. Your text stays in your browser and is never sent to a server.

Latin keys and their Tifinagh letters

In Layout mode, each key types the Tifinagh letter for the Latin letter printed on it, following IRCAM’s Latin transcription: a gives ⴰ, b gives ⴱ, n gives ⵏ. Because the keyboard follows the letter rather than the key position, it behaves the same way on QWERTY and AZERTY. The table lists the less obvious cases.

Letter IRCAM Latin Key
ⵛ c C
ⵅ x X
ⵇ q Q
ⵓ u U or O
ⴹ ḍ Shift + D
ⵃ ḥ Shift + H
ⵄ ɛ Shift + E
ⵖ ɣ Shift + G
ⵕ ṛ Shift + R
ⵚ ṣ Shift + S
ⵟ ṭ Shift + T
ⵥ ẓ Shift + Z
ⴳⵯ gʷ AltGr + G
ⴽⵯ kʷ Shift + K
ⵯ ʷ Shift + W

For example, t, i, f, i, n, a and then Shift+G spell ⵜⵉⴼⵉⵏⴰⵖ.

Phonetic mode, long-press and panels

If you already know how a word is spelled in Latin letters, Phonetic mode is quicker: azul becomes ⴰⵣⵓⵍ and tamaziɣt becomes ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵜ. The shortcuts gh, kh, ch (or sh) and 3 give ⵖ, ⵅ, ⵛ and ⵄ. The IRCAM transcription letters ɛ, ɣ, ḍ, ḥ, ṛ, ṣ, ṭ and ẓ are converted as well.

On screen, long-press a letter to see its variants: ⴷ offers ⴹ and ⴸ, ⵣ offers ⵥ and ⵤ, ⴳ offers ⴳⵯ. Two panels hold the remaining signs: “Emphatic letters, ɛ and ɣ” and “Additional letters”.

To convert a text you already have, use the Tifinagh-Latin converter; to review each letter with its name and transcription, open the Tifinagh alphabet. Kabyle is mostly written in Latin script: the Kabyle keyboard adds ɛ, ɣ and the dotted letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Tifinagh on a QWERTY keyboard?
Use Layout mode: every key types the Tifinagh letter that matches the Latin letter printed on it. A gives ⴰ, Z gives ⵣ and M gives ⵎ, on QWERTY and AZERTY alike. There is nothing to install on your computer.
How do I type ⵖ and ⵄ in Tifinagh?
Press Shift+G for ⵖ (ɣ) and Shift+E for ⵄ (ɛ). In Phonetic mode, type gh or ɣ to get ⵖ, and 3 or ɛ to get ⵄ.
Where are ⴳⵯ, ⴽⵯ and the rarer letters on the Tifinagh keyboard?
ⴳⵯ comes from AltGr+G and ⴽⵯ from Shift+K, and a long-press on ⴳ or ⴽ offers them as well. The Additional letters panel also holds signs that are not among IRCAM's 33 letters, such as ⴶ, ⵞ, ⵝ, ⵒ and ⵠ.
Can I write Tifinagh by typing in English letters?
Yes, in Phonetic mode. Typing tifinagh produces ⵜⵉⴼⵉⵏⴰⵖ; gh, kh, ch or sh give ⵖ, ⵅ and ⵛ, and a capital letter marks an emphatic (D gives ⴹ). IRCAM transcription letters such as ɛ, ɣ, ḍ and ṣ are accepted too.
Do I need to install a font to use the Tifinagh keyboard?
No. The page loads the Noto Sans Tifinagh font automatically, so the letters appear right away. Once pasted elsewhere, the text is still valid Unicode Tifinagh, but the device showing it needs a Tifinagh font; without one, the letters appear as boxes.
What is the difference between Amazigh, Tamazight and Tifinagh?
Amazigh (plural Imazighen) is the name of the Berber people and is also used as an adjective for their language. Tamazight (ⵜⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖⵜ) is the name of the language itself. Tifinagh is the script used to write it, just as the Latin alphabet is used to write English.
Does the Tifinagh keyboard work on a phone?
Yes. On mobile, the on-screen Tifinagh keyboard takes the place of your phone's keyboard, and the Phone keyboard button brings the native one back. Once you install it as an app from your browser, it also works offline.
