This online Russian keyboard shows the ЙЦУКЕН layout used in Russia, so you can write in Cyrillic from any computer, tablet or phone. Click the letters on screen or type on your own keyboard: each key gives the Russian letter found in the same position.

How to use

  1. Click in the text box, then type on your physical keyboard or tap the letters on screen.
  2. Pick QWERTY or AZERTY under “Physical keyboard” so the Latin hints on the keys match yours.
  3. Hold Shift for capitals, and AltGr for the « » quotes, the long dash — or the ₽ sign.
  4. On a touch screen, press and hold е or ь to get ё or ъ.
  5. Click “Copy” and paste the Russian text into your email, document or chat.

The ЙЦУКЕН layout at a glance

The standard Russian keyboard takes its name from the first six letters of its top row: Й, Ц, У, К, Е, Н. The most common letters, such as о, а, е and и, sit in the middle under your index fingers. Because input follows key position, the same physical key always gives the same letter, whether your keyboard is QWERTY or AZERTY.

й Q A
ф A Q
я Z W
ж ; M
э ’ ù
б , ;
ю . :
ё ` ²

Russian punctuation and symbols

Punctuation holds one surprise: the period is on the / key, and Shift plus that same key gives the comma. Digits stay where they are; with Shift, 3 gives № and 7 gives the question mark.

With AltGr (Option on a Mac), four keys turn into handy shortcuts:

  • AltGr + 4: the rouble sign ₽;
  • AltGr + comma: the opening quote «;
  • AltGr + period: the closing quote »;
  • AltGr + the key to the right of 0: the long dash —.

The two rarest letters also have a touch shortcut: holding е offers ё, and holding ь offers ъ, in lower and upper case alike.

New to the Russian layout?

Switch to Phonetic mode above the keyboard and type privet to get привет, letter by letter. The Russian phonetic keyboard page lists every correspondence. To convert a whole text in either direction, the Cyrillic ↔ Latin converter offers French-style or English-style romanization.

Once your text is ready, you can copy it, download it as a .txt file, save it as a PNG image or search for it straight on Google, YouTube or Wikipedia. On a computer, the floating keyboard stays on top while you write in another window (Chrome and Edge).

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Russian on an English keyboard?
Stay in Layout mode and type as usual: every key on your QWERTY keyboard produces the Russian letter in the same physical spot. Q gives й, A gives ф and Z gives я. Nothing needs to be installed or changed in Windows or macOS.
Where is the letter ё on a Russian keyboard?
On the ЙЦУКЕН layout, ё sits on the top-left key just before 1, which is the ` key on a US QWERTY keyboard. On a touch screen, press and hold е to reveal it.
How do I type the hard sign ъ?
The hard sign ъ is to the right of х, on the ] key of a QWERTY keyboard. On mobile, hold the ь key and pick it from the variants.
How do I type Russian quotation marks « »?
Hold AltGr and press the comma key for « or the period key for ». The “Russian punctuation” panel also offers „ “, the long dash —, the № sign and the ₽ symbol.
Can I write Russian without knowing the Cyrillic alphabet?
Yes, with Phonetic mode: you type the word in Latin letters and it appears in Cyrillic, so privet turns into привет. It suits a quick message or your first steps in Russian.
Does this Russian keyboard work on a phone?
Yes. On mobile, the on-screen keyboard replaces your phone's own one, with keys sized for touch. The “Phone keyboard” button brings your usual keyboard back at any time.
Is the Russian text I type sent anywhere?
No. Typing happens entirely in your browser and the text is never sent to a server. It only leaves your device if you copy or share it yourself.
