This Urdu keyboard online follows the standard Windows Urdu layout and shows your text in Nastaliq, the traditional style of Urdu writing. Type on your own keyboard, tap the letters on screen or write in Roman Urdu, then copy the result with one click.

How to use

  1. Keep Layout mode on and check that Physical keyboard is set to QWERTY or AZERTY.
  2. Type on your keyboard: J gives ا, D gives ر, R gives د and S gives و, which spells اردو.
  3. Hold Shift for the extra letters: Shift + R gives ڈ, Shift + D gives ڑ, Shift + F gives ں and Shift + K gives گ.
  4. On a touchscreen, long-press a letter to see its variants, for example ہ for ھ, ۂ or ۃ.
  5. Open the Diacritics (aerab), Honorifics, Punctuation or Urdu numerals panel when you need it.
  6. Click Copy and paste the Urdu text into your chat, email or document.

The Windows Urdu layout on your keyboard

Layout mode uses the standard “Urdu” keyboard from Windows, as recorded in the Unicode CLDR repository. Only the key position matters: the J key types ا, whatever is printed on it. The digits 1 to 0 stay on the top row without Shift. Some landmarks:

Letter QWERTY key AZERTY key
ط Q A
م A Q
ق Z W
ع M ,
ٹ T T
ھ E E
ہ H H
ے C C
ڈ Shift + R Shift + R
ڑ Shift + D Shift + D
ں Shift + F Shift + F
گ Shift + K Shift + K

A handy pattern: Shift often turns a letter into its “cousin” on the same key. د becomes ڈ, ر becomes ڑ, ن becomes ں, ک becomes گ, ج becomes چ and ح becomes خ. The Urdu full stop ۔ is on the period key, and Shift + / gives the question mark ؟.

Letters that make Urdu different

Urdu uses the Arabic alphabet plus extra letters for its own sounds. The retroflex ٹ, ڈ and ڑ are said with the tongue curled back; ں makes the vowel before it nasal, as in میں; ے, the “bari ye”, ends words such as ہے and سے. Urdu also has its own kaf and ye, ک and ی, which are different Unicode characters from the Arabic ك and ي. The Arabic forms are still there (AltGr + K for ك, Shift + L for ي) for quoting Arabic.

Long-pressing a key on screen groups related letters: ت offers ٹ, ث and ط; ی offers ے, ئ, ي and ى; ر offers ڑ, ز and ژ.

Aerab, honorifics and invisible characters

The Diacritics (aerab) panel holds zabar, zer, pesh, do zabar, tashdid, jazm and khari zabar, plus hamza, khari zer and ulta pesh: type the letter first, then the mark. The Honorifics panel adds the signs written after revered names, and ؔ, the takhallus mark placed over a poet’s pen name.

With Shift, the bottom row also gives invisible characters, labelled ZWNJ, ZWJ, LRM and RLM on the keys. ZWNJ (Shift + X) stops two letters from joining without adding a space, while LRM and RLM fix the position of a number or an English word inside an Urdu sentence.

Nastaliq display, Roman Urdu and sharing

Keys and text box use the Noto Nastaliq Urdu font, so Urdu looks the way you are used to reading it. If you normally write in Roman Urdu, Words mode turns salam into سلام and shukriya into شکریہ when you press Space; the Roman Urdu keyboard page explains the rules.

When your text is ready, copy it, save it as a .txt file or a PNG image, or share it on WhatsApp, Messenger or by email. The floating keyboard stays above other windows in Chrome and Edge on a computer, and the installed app works offline. On a phone, the Phone keyboard button brings back your usual keyboard. Your text stays in your browser and is never sent to a server. For posters and social media designs, see Urdu in Photoshop; for Arabic, use the Arabic keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Urdu on an English keyboard?
Open this page and type as usual on your QWERTY keyboard: each key gives the letter found in the same place on the Windows Urdu layout. Q types ط, A types م and T types ٹ. You do not need to add Urdu to your computer's language settings.
Where are ٹ, ڈ and ڑ on the Urdu keyboard?
ٹ sits on the T key with no modifier. ڈ and ڑ need Shift: Shift + R gives ڈ and Shift + D gives ڑ, on the same keys as د and ر. On screen, long-pressing ت, د or ر offers them too.
What is the difference between ہ and ھ in Urdu?
ہ (gol he, on the H key) is the everyday h, as in ہم or شکریہ. ھ (do chashmi he, on the E key) mostly marks an aspirated consonant, as in بھائی, پھول or گھر. Mixing them up is a spelling mistake, even if readers still understand the word.
How do I type ﷺ in Urdu text?
Press AltGr + Y on your keyboard, or tap ﷺ in the Honorifics (ﷺ, ؒ…) panel. AltGr + U gives ؒ and AltGr + I gives ؓ, while the panel also holds ؑ, ؐ, ؔ and the ﷲ ligature.
How do I type Urdu numerals like ۱۲۳?
Hold AltGr (Option on a Mac) and press a digit on the top row: 1 gives ۱ and 0 gives ۰. Without AltGr, the same keys give the digits 1, 2, 3, which are also common in Urdu. The Urdu numerals panel has them as well.
Does Urdu text stay in Nastaliq after I paste it?
What you copy is standard Unicode text, so its look depends on the font of the app you paste it into. Chat apps often show it in a Naskh style. In a word processor, pick a Nastaliq font installed on your computer to get the familiar Urdu look back.
Is this Urdu keyboard a replacement for InPage?
No. It is made for quick Urdu text, such as a message, a search, a short note or a caption that you copy elsewhere. It does not open or save InPage files and has no page layout tools.
