Russian phonetic keyboard
Type in Latin letters: each sound becomes the matching letter (sh → ш).
Dictation uses your browser's speech recognition. Unless it runs on your device, your voice is sent to your browser's service (Google for Chrome, Microsoft for Edge, Apple for Safari); nothing goes through our site.
More options
Long-press a key for variants (e.g. е → ё).

There is no layout to memorize, which makes it the easiest way to write a quick message, a name or your first Russian words.
How to use
- Select “Phonetic” mode above the keyboard.
- Type the word in Latin letters, for example spasibo to get спасибо.
- For combined sounds, chain the letters: zh for ж, ch for ч, sh for ш, shch for щ.
- Add an apostrophe for the soft sign ь, and two apostrophes for the hard sign ъ.
- Check the Cyrillic result, then copy or share it.
Russian phonetic mapping table
Most Latin letters give their direct match: a, b, d, k, m or t become а, б, д, к, м or т. The cases that need a little care are gathered below; the tool also shows its own “Phonetic mapping table” while this mode is on.
| You type | Letter | Example |
|---|---|---|
| zh | ж | zhurnal → журнал |
| kh, h or x | х | khorosho → хорошо |
| c | ц | ulica → улица |
| ch | ч | chaj → чай |
| sh | ш | shkola → школа |
| shch or sch | щ | shchi → щи |
| j | й | moj → мой |
| y | ы | ty → ты |
| ya or ja | я | yazyk → язык |
| yu or ju | ю | yug → юг |
| yo or jo | ё | yolka → ёлка |
| ’ | ь | mal’chik → мальчик |
| ‘’ or # | ъ | pod’’ezd → подъезд |
| e’ | э | e’to → это |
| v or w | в | voda → вода |
Longer combinations always win: shch gives щ rather than шч, and ya gives я rather than ыа. You therefore never need a separator between the letters of a single sound.
Common pitfalls
The rules are close to common English romanization, but a few habits from English spelling lead to the wrong letter:
- Use j for й, not y or i: chaj gives чай, whereas chay would give чаы and chai would give чаи.
- c always gives ц: for the sound in “cat”, type k, as in kot for кот.
- A lone h gives х, so h and kh are interchangeable: hleb and khleb both give хлеб.
- e always gives е: add an apostrophe (e’) when you need э.
If a letter comes out wrong, delete it and retype it; the conversion happens as you type, so each correction is visible at once.
Where to go next
Phonetic typing is ideal to get started, yet the ЙЦУКЕН layout becomes faster with practice: the standard Russian keyboard shows it key by key. To transliterate a complete text, use the Cyrillic ↔ Latin converter, which also works from Cyrillic to Latin. Other keyboards offer sound-based input too, starting with Arabic: you will find them all on the phonetic typing page.
