Words mode recognises whole words such as merci or ketab, while Phonetic mode places every letter exactly as you type it.
How to use
- The page opens in Words mode: type a word in Finglish, such as ketab.
- Press Space and the word turns into کتاب.
- If the suggested spelling is wrong, click another suggestion.
- To choose every letter yourself, switch to Phonetic mode: sh gives ش, zh gives ژ and gh gives غ.
- Check the Persian text, then copy or share it.
Persian phonetic mapping table
Phonetic mode guesses nothing: each Latin letter becomes one Persian letter. Simple consonants map directly (b → ب, d → د, m → م, r → ر). The table below lists the rules worth learning; the tool also shows its own “Phonetic mapping table” while this mode is on.
| You type | Letter | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sh | ش | shb → شب |
| ch | چ | chshm → چشم |
| zh | ژ | zhakt → ژاکت |
| kh or x | خ | khvahr → خواهر |
| gh / q | غ / ق | ghdha → غذا, qnd → قند |
| g / p | گ / پ | grm → گرم, psr → پسر |
| a / A | ا / آ | Asman → آسمان |
| i or y | ی | shir → شیر |
| o, u, v or w | و | dust → دوست |
| e | ه | khane → خانه |
| th / dh | ث / ذ | thrvt → ثروت |
| T, S, H, Z, D | ط, ص, ح, ظ, ض | Tufan → طوفان |
| - | half-space | mi-khvanm → میخوانم |
Words mode for everyday Finglish
In chats, Persian speakers often type with full vowels: salam, chetori, khoobam. Words mode accepts this style, also known as Pinglish. It first checks a dictionary of frequent words (dooset daram, tavalodet mobarak, noruz, lotfan and more), then applies spelling rules to everything else, dropping most short vowels.
Treat the output as a best guess to proofread. In Finglish, the letter a stands both for the long â, written ا, and for the short a, which is not written at all; this is the most common source of errors. So dokhtar first gives دختار, while the correct دختر waits among the suggestions; one click swaps it in. Likewise, gh gives ق first, and the spelling with غ is offered as a suggestion. On a computer, the Esc key undoes the last conversion and brings back the Latin word.
Common pitfalls in Phonetic mode
A few habits from English spelling lead to the wrong letter:
- h alone gives ه: for the throaty sound in khane, type kh or x.
- j gives ج: the sound in “measure” is zh, as in zhakt.
- Words starting with a vowel need an a: airan gives ایران and astad gives استاد, because i on its own gives ی.
- th gives ث: for ت followed by ه, put an e between them, as in teran for تهران.
If a letter comes out wrong, delete it and type it again; conversion happens as you type.
Where to go next
The standard Persian keyboard shows the Iranian layout key by key, which gets faster with practice. If you also write Arabic in Latin letters, the phonetic Arabic keyboard handles Arabizi and its numbers. Every keyboard with sound-based typing is listed on the phonetic typing page.
