The phonetic Arabic keyboard turns what you type in Latin letters into Arabic script. It understands chat-style Arabizi with 3, 7 and 9, and adapts to spelling habits in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, the Levant and the Gulf.

How to use

  1. Pick Words mode to type whole words, or Phonetic mode to choose every letter yourself.
  2. Select your variant: Morocco, Algeria-Tunisia, or Levant and Gulf.
  3. Type a word the way you pronounce it, for example kifach, then press Space.
  4. If the suggested spelling isn't right, click another suggestion.
  5. Copy the Arabic text or share it directly.

From Arabizi and Darija to Arabic script

Across North Africa and much of the Arab world, people text in Latin letters and use numbers for sounds that English and French don’t have. This keyboard works in the other direction: you keep your usual typing habits and the result appears in the Arabic alphabet. It recognises everyday Darija words such as bezzaf, wakha, 3afak and kifach, as well as Standard Arabic ones like shukran and inshallah. Spelling doesn’t have to be strict either: chokran and shukran both end up as شكرا.

Words mode or letter by letter?

Words mode is the quickest way to write full sentences. Like normal Arabic spelling, it leaves out short vowels, and it offers several spellings when a word is ambiguous: type 3la and press Space to get على. Phonetic mode converts each character the moment you type it, so the same 3la gives علا, because the a becomes an alif. Use it for proper names, rare words or any spelling you want to control letter by letter, and add short vowels with _a, _i or _u straight after the consonant.

Choosing the Morocco, Algeria-Tunisia or Levant variant

The Variant selector adjusts the letters that are written differently from one region to another. In Morocco, g gives ڭ, as in gal → ڭال. In Algeria and Tunisia it gives ڨ. In the Levant and the Gulf, g becomes ج and 9 switches from ق to ص. To convert a text you have already written in one go, use the Arabic-Latin converter. Keyboards suited to Moroccan users are listed on the Morocco page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write Arabic using English letters?
Switch to Words mode and type the word as it sounds, for example ahlan. Press Space and it turns into أهلا; any other likely spelling shows up in the suggestions bar.
What do 3, 7 and 9 mean in Arabizi?
They stand for sounds the Latin alphabet lacks: 3 is ع, 7 is ح, and in North Africa 9 is ق. In the Levant and the Gulf, 9 usually means ص instead, and the keyboard follows whichever variant you select.
How do I type the Moroccan letter ڭ phonetically?
With the Morocco variant, the letter g produces ڭ. The Algeria-Tunisia variant turns it into ڨ, and the Levant and Gulf variant into ج. You can also long-press the ك key to insert ڭ.
Why does salam turn into سالام in Phonetic mode?
Phonetic mode converts every Latin vowel into an Arabic letter, because it never guesses short vowels. Type slam to get سلام, or use Words mode, which drops short vowels for you.
How do I type emphatic letters like ص and ط phonetically?
Use capital letters: S gives ص, D gives ض, T gives ط and Z gives ظ. Lowercase s, d, t and z give س, د, ت and ز.
How do I type ta marbuta (ة) on a phonetic keyboard?
Type t followed by an apostrophe: t' gives ة. In Words mode, a word ending in -a may also be offered with ة, so madrasa becomes مدرسة.
