This page helps you put Urdu text in Photoshop, from ٹ ڈ ڑ to the full stop ۔. Type here, then paste the text as it is if Photoshop handles Urdu, or the converted version if the letters show up separated and backwards.

How to use

  1. Type your Urdu text above with your keyboard, the on-screen keys or Roman Urdu in Words mode.
  2. If Photoshop uses the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine, click Copy.
  3. If not, use Design software mode, which is already open: keep Join letters and Reverse order ticked and click Copy converted text.
  4. In Photoshop, click once on the canvas with the Horizontal Type tool and paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
  5. Apply a Nastaliq font to normal text, or a Naskh font that includes the Urdu letter forms to converted text.

Urdu, Nastaliq and Photoshop

Urdu is traditionally written in Nastaliq, a style where letters slope down towards the line and stack on top of each other. It is also the hardest style for software to get right: Photoshop needs a text engine that understands Arabic script, plus an installed Nastaliq font. This page shows your text in Noto Nastaliq Urdu, but in Photoshop the look depends on the font you choose there.

Option 1: the Middle Eastern engine and a Nastaliq font

In Photoshop’s Type preferences (Edit > Preferences > Type on Windows, Photoshop > Settings > Type on a Mac), select the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine and open a new document. Paste the normal text with the Copy button and apply a Nastaliq font installed on your computer. The layer then holds real Urdu text that you can edit later. Try a few words before setting a long paragraph, because the vertical joins of Nastaliq come out more or less faithfully depending on the version.

Option 2: converted text, without Nastaliq

When your version has no such engine, Design software mode, already open on this page, swaps each letter for its joined form and reverses the character order. ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, ں, ہ, ھ and ے all have these forms in Unicode, so most Urdu words display correctly. Keep three limits in mind:

  • The result looks like Naskh, because fixed letter shapes cannot reproduce the slope of Nastaliq.
  • ۂ and ۃ stay detached, since they have no presentation forms.
  • Aerab marks may drift; tick Remove vowel marks if they overlap.

Use point text with one line per layer, and keep the normal version with Download (.txt) for future edits.

Preparing Urdu text without knowing the layout

Got a client’s slogan in Roman Urdu? Type it in Words mode: eid mubarak becomes عید مبارک, with suggestions to check. For a preview that keeps Nastaliq, the PNG image button saves your text as a picture 1080 pixels wide, with a plain background, a thin coloured bar and the site address at the bottom: handy for getting a mock-up approved, less so as final artwork. Nothing is sent to a server. Go back to the main online Urdu keyboard for everyday typing, or compare with the Arabic keyboard for Photoshop and the other keyboards listed for Photoshop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write Urdu in Photoshop?
Prepare the text on this page and paste it into a text layer. With the Middle Eastern and South Asian engine on, paste the normal text; without it, paste the version from Design software mode. Both are one click away.
Can I get real Nastaliq text in Photoshop?
At the very least you need the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine and an installed Nastaliq font such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu. The result then depends on your Photoshop version and the font, so test it first on a word like پاکستان. Converted text can never look like Nastaliq.
Why are Urdu letters disconnected in Photoshop?
The Latin text engine, the default on many installations, cannot join letters or write from right to left. The word پاکستان then shows up as a row of single letters in reverse order.
Why do ۂ and ۃ stay unjoined in converted text?
Unicode has no presentation forms for these two letters, so the conversion leaves them as they are and they do not connect to the letter before. For a word such as نغمۂ, the Middle Eastern engine gives a better result.
Which font should I use for converted Urdu text?
Pick a font that contains presentation forms for the Urdu letters ٹ, ڈ, ڑ, ں, ہ, ھ and ے. A full Naskh font such as Noto Naskh Arabic is a good one to try. Empty boxes mean the font lacks these forms.
How do I add ﷺ to a Photoshop design?
Press AltGr + Y or tap ﷺ in the Honorifics panel, then copy the text. ﷺ is a single character that the conversion leaves untouched. Check that your Photoshop font includes it, otherwise it appears as a box.
Do I need InPage to make Urdu graphics?
Not for a few words: type them here, copy them and paste them into Photoshop. This keyboard does not replace InPage for laying out a book or a newspaper, and it does not exchange files with that software.
