Write Urdu the way you do on WhatsApp, in English letters, and this phonetic Urdu keyboard turns it into Urdu script. Convert whole words with suggestions or place each letter yourself, without learning the Urdu layout.

How to use

  1. Stay in Words mode, which is selected when this page opens.
  2. Type a word in Roman Urdu, such as shukriya, then press Space: it becomes شکریہ.
  3. If the spelling is not the one you want, click another suggestion.
  4. To choose every letter yourself, switch to Phonetic mode: T gives ٹ, D gives ڈ, R gives ڑ and N gives ں.
  5. Check the Urdu text, then copy it or share it on WhatsApp.

Roman Urdu to Urdu with Words mode

Millions of people in Pakistan, India and abroad write Urdu in English letters, especially on WhatsApp and social media. Words mode turns that Roman Urdu back into Urdu script each time you press Space. A dictionary of common words comes first (salam → سلام, mein → میں, hai → ہے, pakistan → پاکستان), and spelling rules handle the rest, so kahani becomes کہانی. Up to six suggestions appear under the text box.

Treat the result as a good guess rather than a final spelling. Roman Urdu leaves out short vowels and does not tell س, ص and ث apart, so check names and less common words before you hit send.

Letter by letter with Phonetic mode

Phonetic mode guesses nothing: each English letter gives one Urdu letter, and a, i, u or e are always written out. So type ktab for کتاب and pkstan for پکستان. Capitals matter:

You type Result Example
T, D, R ٹ, ڈ, ڑ DakTr → ڈاکٹر
N ں hyN → ہیں
e ے he → ہے
i or y ی pany → پانی
A آ Ap → آپ
bh, ph, th, jh, dh بھ, پھ, تھ, جھ, دھ phwl → پھول
Th, Dh, Kh, Gh ٹھ, ڈھ, کھ, گھ Ghr → گھر
kh, gh خ, غ khwsh → خوش
sh, ch, zh ش, چ, ژ shkryh → شکریہ
h, H ہ, ح mHbt → محبت
’ or 3, then 2 ع, then ء 3yd → عید
S, Z ص, ظ Sbr → صبر

While this mode is on, the tool also shows its own Phonetic mapping table.

Common Roman Urdu mistakes

  • h after a consonant: after b, p, t, T, j, d, D or R it makes an aspirated letter (bh → بھ). After n, m, l or r it stays ہ, so nhyN gives نہیں. For کہ or بہ, use Words mode.
  • kh and gh: in lowercase they give خ and غ; with a capital first letter, کھ and گھ.
  • ط, ض, ذ and ث have no English letter of their own: type them in Layout mode, or long-press ت or ز on the on-screen keyboard.
  • On a phone, Words and Phonetic modes use the device’s usual keyboard, because you are typing English letters.

Where to go next

To learn the real key positions, try the main online Urdu keyboard in Layout mode. To put your text on a poster or a social media design, read Urdu in Photoshop. Other languages you can type by sound are listed on the phonetic typing page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Roman Urdu to Urdu script?
Type in Words mode and press Space after each word: aap kaise hain becomes آپ کیسے ہیں. Common words come from a built-in dictionary and the rest are worked out from spelling rules, so read the result before you send it.
Why does larka not give لڑکا straight away?
Roman Urdu does not show the difference between ر and ڑ, or between ت and ٹ. Words mode first offers لرکا and lists لڑکا among the suggestions, so just click it. In Phonetic mode, typing lRka gives لڑکا directly.
How do I type ٹ, ڈ, ڑ and ں with English letters?
In Phonetic mode, use capitals: T gives ٹ, D gives ڈ, R gives ڑ and N gives ں. Lowercase t, d, r and n give ت, د, ر and ن. So DakTr becomes ڈاکٹر and myN becomes میں.
What is the difference between kh and Kh in phonetic Urdu?
Phonetic typing is case-sensitive. kh gives خ, as in khwsh (خوش), while Kh gives کھ, as in Khana (کھانا). In the same way, gh gives غ and Gh gives گھ.
How do I type کہ or بہ when h turns into ھ?
In Phonetic mode, an h after b, p, t, j or d makes the aspirated letter (bh gives بھ), and kh gives خ. For a plain ہ after those letters, use Words mode: kahan becomes کہاں and bohat becomes بہت.
How do I add zabar, zer and pesh when typing phonetically?
Type _a for zabar, _i for zer, _u for pesh and __ for tashdid, right after the letter. For example, k_itab gives کِتاب. The Diacritics (aerab) panel has these marks too.
Can I type Roman Urdu on my phone?
Yes. In Words or Phonetic mode, the page brings up your phone's own keyboard, since you are typing English letters. The Urdu result appears in the text box, ready to copy or share.
