Need Arabic text in Photoshop? Type it here, then paste it into a text layer either as it is or as a converted version with joined letters and reversed order, depending on what your Photoshop supports.

How to use

  1. Type your Arabic text in the box above with the on-screen keys, your computer keyboard or Phonetic mode.
  2. If Photoshop is set to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine, click Copy.
  3. If Photoshop shows separated letters, open Design software mode, keep Join letters and Reverse order ticked, and click Copy converted text.
  4. In Photoshop, pick the Horizontal Type tool, click once on the canvas and paste with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
  5. Select the pasted text and apply a font that includes Arabic, such as Arial, Tahoma or Noto Naskh Arabic.

Why Photoshop shows Arabic backwards

Arabic letters change shape depending on where they sit in a word, and each line reads from right to left. Photoshop only handles this when its Middle Eastern text engine is active. Without it, the word سلام turns into a row of detached letters in reverse order. Old versions are the usual culprit, but a recent installation left on its default setting can do the same.

Arabic text in Photoshop: check the text engine first

Before converting anything, open the Type preferences and select the Middle Eastern and South Asian engine, then work in a new document. Text copied with the Copy button now flows right to left with properly joined letters. This is the best option, because the layer holds real Arabic text that you can correct later like any other text. Do not add the conversion on top of it: the engine would reverse the converted word a second time.

Converted text for older versions

When your version has no such option, Design software mode does the work instead. It swaps each letter for its joined form (Unicode presentation forms) and reverses the character order, so Photoshop displays the word correctly without knowing anything about Arabic. A few habits keep the result clean:

  • Make point text with a single click of the Type tool, not a paragraph box: automatic line wrapping would put the lines in the wrong order.
  • For a two-line headline, convert and paste each line into its own layer.
  • Save the normal version with Download (.txt), since that is the text you will edit and convert again later.

Vector logos follow the same logic, explained on the Arabic keyboard for Illustrator page.

Typing Arabic without knowing the layout

Many designers receive Arabic copy to lay out without reading the language fluently. Words mode helps here: type salam, press Space, and سلام appears, with clickable suggestions. For single letters, Phonetic mode is enough (sh gives ش, 3 gives ع). Your text never leaves the browser and is not sent to any server, which matters for client work that is still under wraps. For everything else you write in Arabic, go back to the main online Arabic keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Arabic in Photoshop?
Write the text here, then paste it into a Photoshop text layer. If your version offers the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine, turn it on and paste the normal text. If not, paste the version produced by Design software mode.
Why are Arabic letters disconnected and backwards in Photoshop?
The active text engine does not handle right-to-left writing or letter joining. This happens in older versions, and also in recent versions still set to the Latin or East Asian engine. Photoshop then places each letter on its own, from left to right.
How do I enable the Middle Eastern text engine in Photoshop?
Go to Edit > Preferences > Type on Windows, or Photoshop > Preferences (Settings in newer versions) > Type on a Mac. In the text engine options, choose Middle Eastern and South Asian. Then create a new document, because existing layers are not always recomposed.
Can I edit converted Arabic text in Photoshop?
It stays a text layer, but every letter is a fixed shape and the character order is reversed. To fix a word, edit the original text on this page, convert it again and replace the whole layer content. Search and spell check will not work on this text.
Which font works with converted Arabic text in Photoshop?
Use a font that contains the Unicode Arabic presentation forms, such as Arial, Tahoma or Noto Naskh Arabic. A font without them shows empty boxes, or Photoshop swaps in a fallback font.
Can I keep harakat (vowel marks) in Photoshop?
Yes with the Middle Eastern engine: the marks sit above and below the right letters. With converted text they may shift or overlap, so tick Remove vowel marks for a clean result.
Do I need to install an Arabic keyboard on Windows to use Photoshop?
No. You type on this page in your browser and copy the result. Your physical keyboard works here directly, without changing your system language.
