This Arabic keyboard with vowels helps you place vowel marks above and below the letters. Add them from your keyboard, from the harakat panel or in phonetic mode, and get a text a beginner can read with confidence.

How to use

  1. Type the Arabic letter that will carry the vowel.
  2. Right after it, add the mark: Shift plus the matching key, or a click in the Vowel marks (harakat) panel.
  3. For a doubled consonant, add the shadda first, then the short vowel.
  4. In Phonetic mode, type _a, _i or _u directly after the consonant.
  5. Enlarge the text to check every mark, then copy the result.

Why Arabic vowel marks matter

Everyday Arabic is written without short vowels: a fluent reader can tell from context whether كتب means kataba (he wrote) or kutub (books). Harakat remove that doubt. You find them in beginner textbooks, children’s books, the Quran, classical poetry and dictionaries. They also pin down the exact pronunciation of a name or a borrowed word, and teachers use them to prepare reading exercises.

Arabic keyboard with vowels: shortcut table

On the standard layout, vowel marks are typed with the Shift key. The table shows which key to use on each type of keyboard, and the matching code in Phonetic mode.

Mark Name QWERTY AZERTY Phonetic
ـَ fatha Shift + Q Shift + A _a
ـُ damma Shift + E Shift + E _u
ـِ kasra Shift + A Shift + Q _i
ـْ sukun Shift + X Shift + X _o
ـّ shadda Shift + ` Shift + ² __
ـً tanween fath Shift + W Shift + Z _an
ـٌ tanween damm Shift + R Shift + R _un
ـٍ tanween kasr Shift + S Shift + S _in

The harakat panel on desktop and mobile

If the shortcuts don’t stick, open the Vowel marks (harakat) panel: each mark is inserted at the cursor, which means right after the letter you just typed. The panel also holds the dagger alif ٰ and the tatweel ـ, a stretching stroke that lets you show a vowel on its own, for instance in a lesson. On a computer you can mix both methods, typing letters on your physical keyboard and clicking the marks. On a phone, the panel spares you from digging through the menus of your native keyboard. Nothing is added automatically, so the vocalised text is exactly what you chose.

Tips for clear, fully vowelled text

  • On a doubled letter the shadda comes first: in دَرَّسَ, the ر takes the shadda and then the fatha.
  • Use the text size buttons to spot a missing or misplaced mark.
  • After pasting into a word processor, pick a clear Arabic font, as some fonts draw the marks very small or let them overlap.
  • To review the letters themselves, the interactive Arabic alphabet also lists the short vowels and signs.
  • For everyday text without vowels, go back to the standard Arabic keyboard online.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a shadda to an Arabic letter?
Type the letter, then press Shift with the key to the left of 1 (the backtick key on a QWERTY keyboard, ² on AZERTY). You can also click the shadda in the harakat panel, or type two underscores in a row in Phonetic mode.
How do I type tanween on a computer keyboard?
Tanween fath ً is Shift+W on QWERTY (Shift+Z on AZERTY), tanween damm ٌ is Shift+R, and tanween kasr ٍ is Shift+S. In Phonetic mode, type _an, _un or _in.
Can the site add Arabic vowel marks automatically?
No, the keyboard does not vocalise text for you; you place every mark yourself. What it does is save you from hunting for the signs, thanks to the shortcuts and the harakat panel.
Should I type the haraka before or after the letter?
Always after the letter that carries it. The mark then sits above or below that letter; typed first, it may attach to the wrong letter or float on its own.
How do I type the dagger alif (ٰ)?
It is in the harakat panel, and you can also type it with AltGr and the key to the left of 1. It mostly appears in Quranic spelling, as in هٰذا.
How can I remove harakat from an Arabic text?
Open Design software mode and tick the Remove vowel marks option. The Copy converted text button then copies a version without any vowel signs.
